Custom fuel mapping made easy

EVER SINCE ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECtion became the de facto standard for modern motorcycles, Dynojet has been a leader in fuel-delivery recalibration. Its newest innovation is the Auto Tune Wideband O2 Controller.

Roughly the size of a package of Tic Tac breath mints, the Auto Tune module works in conjunction with the latest Power Commander V ($370). As with earlier iterations, the feature-rich PC V (available for 2009 and later models) plugs into a bike’s wiring harness between the stock ECU and injector nozzles. The PC V can also be connected via USB interface to a laptop computer running Power Commander Control Center software to allow easy map uploading and editing.

While certain PC V capabilities may court the blower, turbo or nitrous crowds, there’s plenty of appeal for mainstream users, as well. Among the new additions is a pair of expansion ports for connecting optional accessories, such as the Auto Tune, which communicates with the PC V through a short CAN cable.

The Auto Tune comes with an 02 sensor, use of which is mandatory even if your bike is equipped from the factory with such a sensor. Installation is a snap if the exhaust pipe has a threaded Ml8 x 1.5mm bung, as found on many aftermarket systems. The bung fitted to the stock exhaust on our 2009 Suzuki GSXR1000 testbike wasn’t compatible, leaving us with two choices: 1) Drill a hole and weld on the kit-provided bung; or 2) replace the stock system altogether.

We chose the latter option, selecting a race-developed full system from Graves Motorsports ($1443; www. gr av esport. com). We made this decision in part because Dynojet doesn’t currently have a map for the Graves pipe, which would allow us to determine if the Auto Tune was a viable alternative to spending hours of costly dyno-tuning time to create a custom map for the GSX-R.

Following the provided step-by-step instructions resulted in trouble-free hardware installation for both PC V and Auto Tune. Navigating the Control Center software proved intuitive, as well, and required only a modest learning curve.

Enabling Auto Tune attaches a target AFR (air/fuel ratio) table to the current fuel map. You can use standard Dynojet AFR values or type in values of your own into rows and columns of rpm/ throttle-position cells, each corresponding to a cell found in the actual fuel map. 02 level is constantly monitored while the bike is ridden, and real-time adjustments are applied to the mix.

The “trim” level required to achieve the desired AFR target for each cell is recorded in a table that can be viewed when a laptop is reconnected to the bike. Clicking “accept trims” applies the values to the map and zeroes the table. Repeating this process refines the map; you’ll know that you’re “dialed-in” when the sizes of the created trim values become negligible.

Real-time information displayed in the PCCC software as we ran our GSXR on the CW dyno provided convincing evidence that Auto Tune functions as advertised. Even when we started with a blank fuel map (stock values), Auto Tune quickly filled in the mix. Surprisingly, when subjected to fullthrottle pulls, the stock Suzuki map performed on par with the optimized map. The modified map did, however, deliver a subtle improvement in response at smaller throttle openings. The engine ran more smoothly, too.

Another PC V feature we found particularly useful is the ability to switch between two maps-economy vs. per formance, for example-while on the-fly. We witnessed a 3-mpg im provement during back-to-back freeway runs.
