FACTORY FLYER
SPECIAL SECTION STREET FIGHTERS
Catalog custom
Using Harley-Davidson’s hugely successful parts-and-accessories division as a template, Triumph continues to broaden its own catalog of after-sale offerings. Most recent beneficiary is the 2008 Speed Triple.
Of the 30 products currently available for this stripped-down, three-cylinder factory streetfighter, most are simple bolt-ons. Of those, roughly one-third are of the carbon-fiber variety. Some, such as the must-have Fly Screen, are add-ons. Most, though, are out-and-out replacements for existing bits and pieces. Among the latter: Silencer Heatshields, Upper Chain Guard, Heel Guards, Radiator Cowls, Rear Hugger, Sprocket Cover, Cush Drive Cover, Front Mud Guard, Knee Panels, Lower Chain Guard, Tank Pad and Seat Cowl. Whew! Other items, such as the Frame Protectors, may look like c-f but are actually “carbon-effect” plastic.
Most of the aforementioned options fall under the heading of cosmetic upgrades. Not so the “race-only” Arrow pipe. Starting point is a nicely turned-out stainless-steel header that is capped by a low-slung titanium muffler. The 3-into-1 combo provides a 19-pound weight savings over the stock dual-can undertail setup, says Triumph. (High-rise Arrow slip-ons-again, track-only-are also offered.) Middle-range torque and peak-rpm horsepower gains are further claims. Fits nicely behind the paint-matched Belly Pan.
Less glamorous but useful around town and on the open road, the Magnetic Tank Bags expand from 10 to 16 or from 20 to 30 liters; pockets aplenty, too. Don’t leave home without ’em. Ditto the strapdown Tail Pack. And the Gel Seat. And the All Weather Cover. Hey, just because it’s a streetfighter doesn’t mean it can’t be civilized...
