CARB LIGHTENS UP
Kick up your heels and grab the nearest dirthike, the California desert is userfriendly once again. As of December 10, 1998, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) revised emissions regulations for dirtbikes and ATVs, allowing the registration and use of all two-strokes and four-strokes initially banned on January 1, 1997. The result is yet another category of registration: the red sticker, usable in almost all of California. most of the time.
According to the AMA, most California off-road riding areas will be open for six to eight months or more. Most of the high-elevation forests, including the Sierras and coastal mountains north of the San Francisco Bay Area, will be open year-round. Mean while, urban locales with air-quality problems will be either closed or limited to a twoor three-month riding season. Not perfect, but better than nothing, eh?
