NEW FOR `93 KTM
ROUNDUP
THE MOST IMPORTANT news in KTN's ninebike 1993 lineup is the introduction of a 400cc miniThumper.
No photos were available at presstime, but Cycle World has learned that the new bike is based on KTM's liquid-cooled 600 LC4, and shares most of the 600's engine parts, including its 95mm stroke. Downsizing the 600's 553cc engine to 398cc was as simple as decreasing its bore from 78mm to 56.2mm. The 600 LC4, ru mored to have a larger displace ment and to be all-new for `93, isn't. Instead, it, like the rest of the KIM line, gets new-style plastic, and it and the 400 both will use White Power sus pension. Both of these models will be available in E/XC (enduro/ cross country) trim only.
Two SX (super ..... cross) bikes, a 125 ___________ and a 250, are of fered for 1993. Both are pure racebikes, and as such are equipped with close ratio transmissions, 19-inch rear wheels, 2.4-gallon fuel tanks, Dunlop 701 tires and MX-tuned WP suspensions.
i-uso iiueu wiiri iriulociuss tuned WP suspensions and close-ratio transmissions are a 300 and 550 in M/XC (mo tocross/cross country) trim. Both models feature 18-inch rear wheels, sidestands, 0-ring chains and Metzeler Unicross tires. Optional equipment con sists of a 3.3-gallon fuel tank and spark arrester.
For the enduro crowd, KTM has three E/XC two-stroke models, in 125, 250 and 300cc sizes. Each comes standard with lighting, odometer, 3.3gallon tank, sidestand, spark arrester, 0-ring chain, 18-inch rear wheel, enduro-tuned WP suspension, wide-ratio trans mission and Unicross tires.
Mechanical updates for the 125/250/300 two-strokes amount to cylinder-porting changes, carbon-fiber reed valves, new exhaust valves, seamless exhaust pipes, new clutch-disc materials and revalved suspensions. Addi tionally, the 250s have heavier crankshafts, and the 300s and 250 use a 20mm-longer shock that is placed farther forward in the chassis. -Ron Griewe
