UPS AND DOWNS

ROUNDUP

UP: To Dave Despain, for earning his “Motor Mouth" nickname. The hardest-working announcer in motorsports, Despain divvies up his time between NASCAR commentating on CBS, calling the action at selected Camel Pro flat-track races, co-hosting the acclaimed “Motorweek Illustrated" TV show on ESPN, being master of ceremonies at many motorcycle-related functions and contributing (too infrequently) to this magazine. If that weren't enough, Despain's latest venture is called AMA Videos, which is selling video tapes of 1 990 grand prix roadracing and AMA flat-track races. The videos can be ordered by calling 800/462-TAPE. We've previewed several, and can heartily recommend them.

UP: To Ron Rae, for a labor of love called The Goulding Album. Rae’s grandfather. James Goulding. founded the firm that built Goulding sidecars from 1912 to 1 956. and the Goulding Album is a beautifully produced soft-cover book which preserves the history of the line in words and vintage photographs. To get your copy, send $ 1 1.95 to Ron Rae at 1 975 Bates St., Birmingham. MI 48009.

UP: To the board of trustees of the American Motorcyclist Association for establishing a staff office of the AMA's Governmental Relations Department in Washington. D.C. Senior legislative affairs specialist Jim Bensberg, with the AMA since 1 987. will man the office as the AMA continues its efforts to deal with the deluge of proposed legislation that could affect motorcyclists.

DOWN: To us, for having a lousy sense of direction. In our October “Built for Speed" article, we incorrectly located John Cordona's Fours N’ More shop in Canoga Park. California, when, in truth, the shop was a few miles to the west, in Reseda. Now, Cordona has moved the whole operation. Fours N' More's new address is 21623 Devonshire Ave., Chatsworth, CA 9131 1. The new phone number is 8 1 8/34 16292.

UP: To “Bring On The Clowns! Racing." an Oakland, California, endurance roadracing team dedicated to cheering up to the patients of Oakland’s Childrens Hospital with clowns and magicians. At the team’s first race, the WER.A 24 Hours West at Willow Springs Raceway. it finished second in class and 16th overall aboard a stock FZR400. garnering $2500 in pledges in the process, which will be used to, well, bring on the clowns.

UP: To Brian Catterson, for signing up for a tour of duty on the good ship Cycle World. Catterson joins us this month as Associate Editor after serving a three-year stint at Cvc/e News. Twenty-nine years old. Catterson will edit our Race Watch section when he’s not writing features, conducting road tests, doing interviews, club-roadracing his Cagiva Alazzurra 750 or competing in Novice motocross races. Welcome aboard, Brian.

If you come aeross a motorcycle-related item that you think should he singled out for an UP or DOWN, send the information to CIV Roundup, 853 Hi /7th St., Costa Mesa, CA 92627.
