MOOSE RACING HEAVYWEIGHT FLYWHEEL

An enduro visa for a motocross bike

STRANGE AS IT MAY SEEM, ENDUROS these days are no longer won by enduro bikes. Each of the first three national enduros of 1988 was won by a motocross bike that had been modified for enduro use. Randy Hawkins and Dave Bertram are both riding Suzuki RM250s, and Larry Roeseler is on a Kawasaki KX250-all bikes that began life as motocrossers and were whittled into enduro trim.

You also may have noticed that Cycle World has done quite a few MX-to-enduro-bike conversions over the past few years. And each of those projects involved adding flywheel weight to slow down the lightningfast response of the stock MX engine. That has always been a difficult undertaking, though, meaning the replacement of crankshafts, the swapping of flywheels, the bolting-on of a ring of brass or the welding-on of a ring of steel.

Now there’s someone who makes that job much easier. Moose Racing will weld a %-pound stainless-steel weight onto the stock ignition rotor of most motocross bikes for $89.95, plus exchange. We sampled such a flywheel on a Honda CR250R, and found that Moose does an excellent job. The stock timing marks are stamped on the face of the weight, and the whole unit is machined down to fit inside the stock engine cases.

We’ve done this type of modification enough to know that, if your goal is trail rather than track, just about any stock motocrosser will benefit from the added weight. The powerband will be more controllable, and the bike will be less likely to stall. If you want to find out foryourself, contact Moose Racing, 6235 South Santa Fe, Littleton.
